SUMMARY OF THE LESSON
Albert Einstein was born on 14 March 1879 in the German city of Ulm. He could pick up talking only at the age of two and a half years. His classmates used to call him ‘brother boring’. He loved mechanical toys. When his sister was born, he asked where were her wheels. When he was admitted to a school in Munich, he often clashed with his teachers. At the age of fifteen, he left the school for good.
Einstein was highly gifted in mathematics and had a keen interest in physics. He decided to study at the University of Zurich. There he developed an interest in Mileva Maric, her classmate. At the age of 21, he graduated from the university. In 1902, he joined the patent office in Bern. While he was supposed to assess other people’s investigations, he secretly developed his ideas.
He gave his famous theory, ‘Special Theory of Relativity’. He finally married Mileva in 1903 and had two sons. But after years of constant fighting, the couple divorced in 1919. Einstein married his cousin Elsa the same year. He received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1921. When the world war broke out, he warned the authorities against the nuclear bomb. Still, the United States developed this bomb and used it in the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945. Einstein was deeply shaken by the extent of the destruction. He used his popularity to campaign for peace and democracy. He is remembered as a world citizen and a scientific genius today.
